In lay terms, it’s like shaking the etch-a-sketch. Formatting wipes your memory card clean. It erases all of the pictures on the card and sets the card up to receive more new pictures.
Isn’t that the same as deleting all of the pictures? Why should I bother? If you select your camera’s delete all function, you’ll only remove the pictures. File fragments are little computer files that tell the camera where the pictures were located may remain. Think of file fragments as the table of contents, cover page, and bibliography of a book. They may stay on the card and cause some traffic congestion. Deleting all of the pictures leaves these fragments behind. Formatting gets rid of them. If the file fragments stay on the card for long periods of time, and you keep adding new file fragments by selecting delete all pictures, you may eventually find that your memory card will fill up with file fragments and hold fewer pictures. Worse, it may cause your card to become corrupted. When a card is corrupted, you are almost guaranteed to lose some, if not all of your pictures. My experience shows that this happens at the worst possible moment, often after the trip of a lifetime. Usually a corrupted card can be fixed with formatting, but occasionally it will need to be replaced. When should I format my card? You should format your card first thing when you put it in your camera when the card is new. You should format it whenever switching the card to a new or different camera. You should format your card any time you want to delete all of the pictures. Basically, you should format your card often. Cards do not wear out from being formatted too many times. Where do I format my card? Format your card in the camera you intend to use it in. Even though you may connect the card to your computer, and you have the option of formatting the card using your computer, you should only format in the camera. Your computer may use a different type of formatting than your camera. Sometimes formatting in the computer can even keep your memory card from working in your camera. You’re right! Now, How do I format my card? Most cameras will have a “format” feature in the setup menu of the camera. Olympus refers to this as "Card Setup." If you can’t find this in the menu, check your camera’s instruction manual. If you still can’t find the format feature of the camera, call or stop by our store, and we’ll show you how to do it. Fun Facts Dearborn has been host to numerous famous residents. Of course, the first name to come to mind is Henry Ford, but Dearborn was also home to actor George Peppard of A-Team fame, and singer Bob Seger. Did You Know? The Argus Camera Company was founded in 1936 in nearby Ann Arbor, Michigan. Argus produced the famous rangefinder camera the C-3 for over 25 years. The company was bought and sold by Sylvania, but it is now located in Illinois, where inexpensive digital cameras are marketed under the Argus name.
